VICTIMS IN SOCIETY
FALL 2000
BOOKS AND READINGS

ASSIGNED TEXTS

Karmen, A (2001) Crime Victims. Monterey: Wadsworth (Fourth Edition) NOTE ON EDITIONS. You may use the third edition if you wish, by buying a used copy. It seems to me that not that much has been added in the fourth edition. But what the author has done is move around where specific material is in each chapter. In other words, when we are referring to a particular page number, and I am using the fourth edition, and you have the third edition, the page references will be off.

ONLINE READINGS AND WARNINGS AND ADVICE

In addition we will be reading a lot of material from online sources. I am doing this to save you money from buying lots of overpriced course packets. But to effectively use the online readings you must make plans to download them and read them on your computer, or download them and print them out.

When the readings are available online, they can be available in either or both of the following formats. One format is a BROWSER format, where you point your internet browser (for example, IE, or Netscape) at the url listed, and click on it. This then takes you to the web address where the file is. A second format is an Adobe Acrobat PDF (portable document file) format) where you click on the link, and it takes you to the file and opens up the PDF file.

In either mode - PDF or BROWSER - you can save a file for later viewing or printing. But if you are using the PDF file, and if you are using your own computer, rather than a university computer, you need to be sure that your computer has installed a free piece of software called adobe acrobat reader. It allows you to read a type of file called a PDF file. To get it go to this address:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

You will need about 6 megabytes on your computer to download the files you need. This takes a while. If you are not a tekkie you might wanna get someone who is to help you get Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. You will need this for both the VIEWING and PRINTING of PDF files.

You want to get all this setup straightened out well before you are going to need to access online documents if you plan on using an off-campus computer.

In the past students also have complained about printing problems. There are some printers on campus that are less than optimal. However you also should know that there are some good printers around such as in the basement of Speakman and in the lab in Ritter.

You can download the files here on campus for a fast download, and print it out at home where you have a better printer, but you will need to have adobe acrobat reader already installed on your home computer.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SAVING MONEY, BEFORE YOU GO TO THE BOOKSTORE AND BUY: You might want to check out some on-line sources for buying books. Texts that MIGHT be cheaper on-line include

AMAZON.COM

VARSITYBOOKS.COM

AMAZON.COM is a proven, reliable source for book purchases. Remember: you will have to pay extra for shipping, and you need a credit card and an email address to place an order.
VARSITYBOOKS.COM is a new outfit run by some young entrepreneurs. I have NO information about their reliability. I don't know how fast they ship. I don't know if they have everything in stock they say they do.
NOTE: I, of course, recommend Temple University Bookstore as your most reliable and reputable textbook source. I neither endorse nor recommend AMAZON.COM or VARSITYBOOKS.COM. I do, however, want my students to save money wherever possible

The following titles are recommended. The first is recommended if I think or you think you need help with your writing. The second is recommended if I think or you think you need help with your web searching skills. I have not ordered these for this course but these are pretty easily obtained at Amazon or a Borders or Barnes&Noble.
