Your grade will be based in the following

20%

 Average grade on quizzes on the readings. I will drop the lowest grade before calculating the average; I may drop the two lowest grades. If you miss a quiz without pre-authorization, you will receive a zero for that quiz. Pre-authorization means that you contact me before the missed quiz, and that your excuse is acceptable.
     Quizzes may occur as often as once a week, or as infrequently as once every three or four weeks. The quizzes will always be on Mondays.
     Please note: you might want to be sure before you leave campus on Friday that you have the readings you need.

20%

There will be two in-class writing exercises where I ask you to write about the material covered, in the readings and in in-class presentations. Each one will count 10%. The first one will cover the first half of the semester. The second one will cover the second half of the semester. The format will probably be Essay McNugget: I think up some questions, and you write some answers.

45%

Average grade on ALL paper assignments. It is not clear at this time exactly how many paper assignments there will be. I anticipate at least three, perhaps as many as five. For each paper you will receive the assignment at least two weeks before it is due. One (but probably not more than one) of these may be a group task, with your group receiving a group grade. Furthermore, I anticipate the one group assignment also will require that you present the results at an informal poster session held in the department on the last day of class. More details will follow.

5%

Participation. Some days when we complete in-class work I will ask you to turn something in with your name on it. If you are present and turn something in every time we do this you get all these points. Based on past semesters that may occur as few as four times or as many as eight.

10%

 Completing post-course assessment. This will be given during the final exam period, at the date and time listed below. I anticipate it could take at least an hour and a half. This is not a graded assignment. You receive full credit for this portion of the grade just by showing up and completing the assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to learn more about what competencies you have acquired as a result of your participation in this course. I expect that I will be asking you to write answers to open-ended questions. I am sure your comments will be thoughtful! The assessment cannot be accommodated within the course evaluation format.

WEDNESDAY 12/15/1999 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

NOTE. In order for me to issue you a grade for this course you must:
* complete all paper assignments
* complete all but two of the weekly quizzes
* complete exam 1 and exam 2
* complete the post-course assessment

NOTE: See grading policies for guidelines on late and missed exams, late papers, and how not to lose points with your papers.
