Victims in Society

CJ 141

Fall 2000

Assignment for paper 2

DUE: 10/30/00

In less than a month, either Albert Gore or George W. Bush is likely to be elected President of the United States. You may not want to vote for either of these candidates. You may want to vote for Buchanan or Nader. I don't care who you vote for as long as you vote.

Given this momentous event, I would like you to view part of Debate 2 where several issues pertinent to victims were discussed: racial profiling, guns, hate crimes, and so on. I also would like you to search the web sites of the two candidates to learn more about what each of them has to say about victims' issues.

The purpose of this assignment is to use the material they have provided, in the second debate (please also watch the third debate because that may contain relevant material as well), and on their web sites, where more detailed position papers are posted, and to contrast what the two candidates say about ONE victims' issue. That issue could be the victims Bill of Rights, or hate crime, or guns, or racial profiling.

Be sure to put quotes in quotes. Be sure to properly cite web sources. You will need references. If you have questions about this, go to my home page (www.rbtaylor.net) click on SOCIAL SCIENCES, scroll down do the section EVALUATING WEB SOURCES, and click on the link about how to CITE them (from Paula Hammett.).

On the Al Gore site (http://www.algore2000.com) you can

-select GUNS as an issue, and a position paper comes up.

- put in GUNS as a keyword, and read the results that come up

- in the lower right, under SEARCH, you can put in the word VICTIMS and see what comes up; tell it to search the whole site. You should see several items come up including one that is dated July 18.

-also, on the front page of the Al Gore site, read their rebuttal about Debate 2 and the discussion about hate crime. This is under their section DEBATE REBUTTAL.

On the Bush site (http://www.bush2000.com)

-put in GUNS as an issue, and look at what comes up

- click on NEWS AND INFO, and this can take you either to press releases or speeches

-You can read a 10/15/00 news release about Gore's record on victims' rights (according to Bush)

- you can put in key search words at the upper right, and search the site for things like "VICTIMS RIGHTS" or "HATE CRIME" or "RACIAL PROFILING"

In addition to learning what each candidate has to say, you MUST connect the material that is discussed here with something you have learned about victims from the readings to date in this class. This connection must be to a major issue in the readings we have had to date, not a trivial issue.

Suggested structure of the paper:

-first, describe the one victims-related issue you want to explore

-second, summarize the position of one candidate on this issue, citing the appropriate references

third, summarize the position of the other candidate on the issue, citing the appropriate references

fourth, provide a short statement of the MAIN difference

fifth, link the issue to some major material we already have had in the course

sixth, provide references

FORMAT

- typed, double spaced

- SSN only on EACH PAGE

- Excluding the references, no more than THREE pages
