BOOKS AND READINGS

In this course you are going to be reading from at least a couple of major books; in addition, you are going to be reading articles that you obtain from on-line sources.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SAVING MONEY, BEFORE YOU GO TO THE BOOKSTORE AND BUY: You might want to check out some on-line sources for buying books. Texts that MIGHT be cheaper on-line include

AMAZON.COM

VARSITYBOOKS.COM

AMAZON.COM is a proven, reliable source for book purchases. Remember: you will have to pay extra for shipping, and you need a credit card and an email address to place an order.

VARSITYBOOKS.COM is a new outfit run by some young entrepreneurs. I have NO information about their reliability. I don't know how fast they ship. I don't know if they have everything in stock they say they do. I have inquired about text prices and availability.

Here is what they told me.

NOTE: I, of course, recommend Temple University Bookstore as your most reliable and reputable textbook source. I neither endorse nor recommend AMAZON.COM or VARSITYBOOKS.COM. I do, however, want my students to save money wherever possible

YOU SHOULD BUY EACH OF THE FOLLOWING:

James Jacobs (1988) Drunk driving: An American Dilemma. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.

Don Kates and Gary Kleck (1997) The Great American Gun Debate. San Francisco: Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy

Cook, P., and Ludwig, J. (1997). Guns In America. Washington: Police Foundation

YOU SHOULD BUY ONLY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

W. Strunk and E. B. White The Elements of Style.

Gary Provost (1994) 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing. New York: Signet

YOU WILL NEED TO EITHER BUY THE FOLLOWING, OR PLAN ON COPYING THE PAGES YOU NEED FROM THE TWO COPIES AVAILABLE IN THE RESERVE ROOM. NOTE THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF USED COPIES FLOATING AROUND THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO PICK UP CHEAP FROM ANOTHER STUDENT

R. B. Taylor (1994) Research Methods in Criminal Justice. New York: McGraw Hill.

Don't spend the money if you can help it. Seriously.

OTHER READINGS
You will be reading a number of articles that are available on-line. You should know how to run on-line article lookup engines like PROQUEST DIRECT and JSTOR. We may be able to devote a portion of some class time to that.
