RE: Academic Misconduct, Missed Quizzes, Missed Labs for 1-6

CAUTION AGAINST ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT

At this time of the semester when time is short, grades are on the line, and you know others who are doing it, the temptations to engage in academic misconduct are extremely strong. I urge you, in this and your other courses, to resist those temptations. Engaging in academic misconduct can bring severe consequences.

I know it is extremely disheartening that cheating is so common. Here are some quotes from recent studies done by the Center for Academic Integrity

Temple's undergraduate policies follow at the end of this memo

MISSED QUIZZES
As originally stipulated in the syllabus distributed in class on the first day of class, and as posted on the web site, (http://www.rbtaylor.net/161sp01requirements.htm), you are required to complete all but one of the quizzes, and all of the lab papers, in order to be eligible to pass this course. Since we have had eight quizzes, that means you need to have completed seven.

I have decided to modify the QUIZ portion ONLY of that policy as follows: if you are not eligible to do makeup quizzes, you lose one letter grade (e.g., C to C-) for each missed quiz. So someone who has a B final grade and only 6 completed quizzes would get a B-. Some who has a B final grade and completed only 5 quizzes would get a C+ . From my grading records it looks like the following people are in this group - they missed more than one quiz, and they failed to notify me in a timely manner with a compelling excuse for the missed quiz.

Several students have missed more than one quiz, but have notified me in a timely manner, and in keeping with the makeup policy, also as stated in the syllabus. These students, who are listed below, should make arrangements with one of the TAs to take their missed quiz(zes) on Tuesday 5/1/01. This is the only time we will be allowing you to do the makeup quizzes. Consult with Karima, Caroline, or Patrick. Each of them will be here on Tuesday. Between all three of them we should have six available hours in which you can take the makeup.

62-6718 complete 3 of: 2, 6, 7, 8

25-3652 complete 5 or 6

56-2496 complete either 1 or 5

58-3934 complete either 1 or 5

LATE PAPERS (UP THROUGH LAB PAPER 6, DOES NOT INCLUDE LAB PAPERS 7 OR 8) The following persons are missing one or more labs up through lab number 6. Check the big spreadsheet to see which ones you have missed. Any missed LAB 3s or missed LAB 5s MUST BE TAKEN ON 5/1/01, the study day, and you MUST make an appointment with one of the TAs to take the lab on that day. Since these labs involve the TAs watching you complete the task, this is the only time they can be completed. REMEMBER: you must attempt all the labs to be eligible for a passing grade in this course.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY POLICIES Plagiarism and Academic Cheating
from: http://www.temple.edu/ugbulletin96/policies_part2.html#pac

'Temple University believes strongly in academic honesty and integrity. Plagiarism and academic cheating are, therefore, prohibited. Essential to intellectual growth is the development of independent thought and a respect for the thoughts of others.

The prohibition against plagiarism and cheating is intended to foster this independence and respect. Plagiarism is the unacknowledged use of another person's labor, another person's ideas, another person's words, another person's assistance. Normally, all work done for courses papers, examinations, homework exercises, laboratory reports, oral presentations is expected to be the individual effort of the student presenting the work. Any assistance must be reported to the instructor. If the work has entailed consulting other resources -- journals, books, or other media -- these resources must be cited in a manner appropriate to the course. It is the instructor's responsibility to indicate the appropriate manner of citation. Everything used from other sourcesÑsuggestions for organization of ideas, ideas themselves, or actual languageÑmust be cited.Failure to cite borrowed material constitutes plagiarism.

Academic cheating is, generally, the thwarting or breaking of the general rules of academic work or the specific rules of the individual courses. It includes falsifying data; submitting, without the instructor's approval, work in one course which was done for another; helping others to plagiarize or cheat from one's own or another's work; or actually doing the work of another person.

The penalty for academic dishonesty can vary from a reprimand and receiving a failing grade for a particular assignment, to a failing grade in the course, to suspension or expulsion from the University. The penalty varies with the nature of the offense, individual instructor, the department, and the school or college. Students who believe that they have been unfairly accused may appeal through the school or college's academic grievance procedure. See Grievances."
