ONLINE READINGS AND WARNINGS AND ADVICE
In addition we will be SOME material from online
sources. I am doing this to save you money from buying overpriced
course packets. But to effectively use the online readings you must
make plans to download them and read them on your computer, or
download them and print them out.
When the readings are available online, they can be
available in either or both of the following formats. One format is a
BROWSER format, where you point your internet browser (for example,
IE, or Netscape) at the url listed, and click on it. This then takes
you to the web address where the file is. A second format is an Adobe
Acrobat PDF (portable document file) format) where you click on the
link, and it takes you to the file and opens up the PDF file.
In either mode - PDF or BROWSER - you can save a
file for later viewing or printing. But if you are using the PDF
file, and if you are using your own computer, rather than a
university computer, you need to be sure that your computer has
installed a free piece of software called adobe acrobat
reader. It allows you to read a type of file called a PDF file. To
get it go to this address:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
You will need about 6 megabytes on your computer to download the
files you need. This takes a while. If you are not a tekkie you might
wanna get someone who is to help you get Adobe Acrobat Reader
installed. You will need this for both the VIEWING and PRINTING of
PDF files.
You want to get all this setup straightened
out well before you are going to need to access online documents
if you plan on using an off-campus computer.
In the past students also have complained about
printing problems. Try the writing center.
You can download the files here on campus for a
fast download, and print it out at home where you have a better
printer, but you will need to have adobe acrobat reader already
installed on your home computer.
YOU WILL NEED A DECENT QUALITY DESKJET OR LASERJET TO PRINT OUT PDF FILES - IT IS A WASTE OF PAPER TO PRINT THEM OUT ON ANY KIND OF DOT MATRIX PRINTER.
