SAMPLING

Monday 10/18

We discussed in class different sampling strategies for the various media projects. The steps in the sampling process are:

  1. Clearly defining the population of interest. What is the UNIVERSE of items in which you are interested?

  2. What are the steps you will follow to construct a SAMPLING FRAME. The sampling frame is the listing of units from which you will sample.

  3. What are the SPECIFICS of the SAMPLING PLAN. You must follow a representative sampling plan; with such a plan the probability of each unit in your population being selected is known or can be calculated. Further, and more importantly, you can obtain a sample that ADEQUATELY REFLECTS the population. It allows you to refer back to the population of interest. For several of the groups the specifics boil down to selecting times, channnels, days, and deciding once you sample WHAT you will sample and for how long.

I would like for you (EACH TEAM) to bring to class on MONDAY a write up of your sampling plan. Your sampling plan will define the population, and describe the specific strategy you will follow. You will bring copies to class to distribute - if you want me to make copies please leave them in my mailbox by 11 AM or so.

On Monday and Wednesday teams will be presenting their sampling plans, and getting feedback on them from others in the group. After the feedback each team will revise its plan. I will be setting a time outside of class next week to meet with each team.
