Extra Credit Assignment

Read either Tracy Kidder's Home Town or Simon and Burns' The Corner.

If you read Kidder, answer the following questions, being sure to use properly cited quotes from the text to make each point:

• What factors -- organizational, ecological, perhaps political, perhaps personal, perhaps historical -- enable Tommy O'Connor to practice a respect-based model of policing in Northampton? What advantages and disadvantages does this create for him?

If you read Simon and Burns, answer the following questions, being sure to use properly cited quotes from the text to make each point:

• What factors -- organizational, ecological, perhaps political, perhaps economic -- make it difficult for the Baltimore Police Department to adopt a respect-based model of policing in  DeAndre McCullough's neighborhood on the near west side of Baltimore? What advantages and disadvantages does not adopting a respect-based model create for the Baltimore PD?

• Since this is an extra credit option, you are opting to do it, it is not required. BUT I NEED TO HAVE YOUR PAPERS HANDED TO ME PERSONALLY NO LATER THAN FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1. I WILL BE EXTREMELY UNWILLING TO ACCEPT ANY LATE PAPERS - YOU MISS THE DEADLINE, YOU MISS THE OPTION. Sorry.
• Your paper must be typed, double spaced, with only your SSN at the top of each page.
• You get more extra credit if your paper properly quotes material. Any quote you provide

                * must have quotes around it
                * must have an in-line citation 
                * must have a PAGE number as part of that in-line citation (e.g., Kidder, 1999: 374)

• Your paper will get more extra credit if it is well organized, with no grammatical or spelling errors, and proper references in a reference list.
• Your paper will get more extra credit if it integrates into your discussion of these questions       readings and classroom presentation we already have had in class on the respect-based model of policing. I am looking for you to apply what you are reading about and hearing about in class to the example you have chosen. This is a key part of this assignment.
• Your paper will get more credit if it is clear from the examples and quotes you choose that you have read to the end of the volume.
• I will stop reading after three pages.
• Your paper could get anywhere from 0 to 3 points extra credit; a truly exceptional paper will get 4.

POINT SYSTEM

0    Bad grammar, misspellings, disorganized presentation, references not properly listed at the end, quotes not included or not properly referenced, no use of class materials.

1    Bad grammar, misspellings, presentation somewhat organized, some quotes included, but may not be properly referenced, fail to integrate class materials into your presentation.

2    As below but you have writing and/or spelling and/or referencing and/or organization problems; you DO, however, have some elements of thoughtful integration between the answers to the book question, and the class material.

3    Good grammar, good spelling, organized and thoughtful presentation, proper reference list, relevant quotes properly referenced, class material well integrated, it is clear you have read the entire volume.
