RE: Clarifying
I said that I would NOT require that you have by class time the ANOVA output originally listed as DUE on this date (2/9/04). I meant that. Of course, if you CAN get an ANOVA output, then bring it. If you cannot, that's ok too, but I will require that you turn in an ANOVA output the following week. That is, the 2/9, along with the 2/16 assignment, will both be due on 2/16.
It is important that you spend time this week, working either with the PHMC data file, or the example data files you can download from SSICENTRAL, on getting to know HLM. You want to be able to generate an SSM file from a Level 1 and Level 2 data file. Spend time at home working on this, or in the lab, and bring questions if you are getting stuck.
We will start of class by discussing the readings for class - the two by Sampson, and the Covington and Taylor; the latter is intended as an example in two ways; it is a contextual analysis, and it looks at some social capital issues.

RE: Getting ready for CJ 605 on 1/26
Greetings. Now that you all have recovered from Celebrations
For The King's (Elvis' of course) Birthday, we can start to
get serious. Two items. Well, three.
ONE
Our first meeting is next Monday 1/26, 6:00 PM in GH 553.
In preparation for that meeting you should read some articles
posted online; go to
http://www.rbtaylor.net/cj605_sp_04_sequence.htm
You will see the readings listed, and links to most of the
readings. The Arnold reading you need to look up on Acad
Search Premier and print out. DO NOT WORRY if you do not
understand the Arnold reading; you will be digesting chunks
of it as we progress through the semester. You also will see
links to questions to think about as you read the articles.
DO NOT go to all the links and print them all out. Many of
these are still changing.
DO NOT print out this sequence or the questions or the
assignments pages; these are NOT YET COMPLETED. Just print
out your readings and questions, and try and write answers to
a few of the questions. I will be getting you copies of these
completed pages when they are done.
TWO
We have more students than computers, so we will be using an
adjoing classroom. So when you come to class bring with you
the following information
- do you have a laptop
- is it wireless and can it access the Temple Wireless system
- do you have SPSS student version on it?
THREE
- if you have a laptop, try and download and install the HLM
student version on your laptop. To get to the student version
go to:
http://www.ssicentral.com/other/hlmstu.htm
- the program has some limitations, but it should allow you
to follow along with what we are doing in class.
c u soon; stay well.
