Writing Tips: Favorite Authors

Payne

For those seeking some advice on writing short essays I cannot recommend too strongly Lucille Vaughan Payne's "The Lively Art of Writing"

Payne, L. V. (1969). The Lively Art of Writing. New York: New American Library.

I especially recommend chapters 6 and 7 and if you have the time chapters 2 through 5. Available through Amazon but it takes about 2-4 weeks to ship. You can link to what I think are some key pages from her book if you go to www.rbtaylor.net/payne_33_55.pdf

Strunk & White

Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" is absolutely essential:

Strunk, W., Jr., & White, E. B. (1979). The Elements of Style (Third ed.). New York: MacMillan.

You can get the early Strunk version online at:

http://www.bartleby.com/141/index.html

I strongly recommend you read section: V. WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS COMMONLY MISUSED

Zinsser

Zinsser has written for magazines for decades. His writing guide is:

Zinsser, W. (2006). Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction. New York: Harper Collins.

Strongly recommend "Part I: Principles", pp 3-48.
